The best treatment for a heart attack depends on when you get medical attention. In one study of 840 people who suffered such attacks, those treated within two hours fared better when given clot-busting drugs. Those treated two to six hours after symptoms appeared did better with balloon angioplasty.

Smoking increases a woman’s risk for a severe and often fatal bleeding stroke known as an intracerebral hemorrhage. A nine-year study of 39,783 women found those who smoked 15 or more cigarettes a day were three times more likely to have a bleeding stroke than nonsmoking women.
