Chipotle

Photo of burritoOne of the freshest faces on the fast-casual eating scene, Chipotle can best be described as a lean green dining machine.

To wit: As part of the chain’s effort to serve “Food With Integrity,” 100 percent of the pork and chicken is naturally raised, as is 60 percent of its beef. All of the naturally raised meat comes from animals that are grown humanely, never given antibiotics or added hormones, and fed a pure vegetarian diet with no animal by-products. And 25 percent of the produce is locally grown, making Chipotle the only national restaurant company with a significant commitment to using produce from local farms.

Some of the franchises are “green” buildings, too, and many recycle glass and plastic bottles.

The chain has also simplified ordering. It serves burritos, burrito bowls (burritos without the tortilla), tacos, and salads. But customers can choose from four different meats—chicken, steak, pork, and shredded beef—two types of beans, and a variety of extras, such as sour cream, salsas, guacamole, cheese, and lettuce.

The trick to putting together a lower-calorie, lower-fat dish is to ask for a limited amount of primary ingredients and skip the cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. Keep in mind that ordering a burrito bowl instead of a burrito will save you 290 calories and 9 fat gm.
