Canned Soup

Photo of a spoonCanned soup products are trending toward ready-to-eat varieties rather than condensed soup to which you must add water. Typically, condensed soup is less expensive, but ready-to-eat soup may be heartier with more substantial ingredients. In both categories, you can find low-fat and low-sodium options. Here are some shopping tips:

  • Choose reduced-sodium or no-salt-added soups; check the sodium content in the nutritional data to verify the claim.
  • Opt for soups that are high in fiber, such as those that contain barley, beans, or lentils.
  • Be aware that some soups (such as tomato) may be high in sugar and may contain corn syrup.
  • Avoid cream soups that are high in fat. If you need one for a recipe, opt for the low-fat version.
