Doctors Should Prescribe Testosterone Therapy to Men Only for Sexual Dysfunction

Everyday Health: After reviewing evidence, the American College of Physicians updated their guidelines for testosterone replacement therapy




As men age, their testosterone levels drop naturally. According to the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, approximately 20 percent of men older than 60 have low testosterone levels, 30 percent of men over 70 do, and 50 percent of men over 80.


There has been some confusion about how this should be treated, if at all. The American College of Physicians (ACP) has issued new evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, published in the January 6, 2020, issue of Annals of Internal Medicine. In looking at a systematic evidence review that included 38 randomized controlled studies, the ACP Guidelines Committee did not find adequate data to support using testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for anything but sexual dysfunction.
